So much has happened since the last post. Finished up all of my pre-req's for nursing school, got accepted into Azusa pacific's nursing program, Baby James has come to live with us, My sister gradutated from High school, Bryan and Tiffany came out for a visit, met up with Brian Hanne, went up and saw Chad and Lisa Blowers, Juan and Debbie came out for a nice long visit, (still too short). and this isn't even everything, i will try to post up some pictures of all the happenings soon.

So a couple of months ago we went to hear Michael and Debbie Pearl speak at a church near us.
It was great! The books they have written have been very helpful to us. (although we don't agree with everything they teach) They were so gracious really emphasizing love for the Lord, love for your spouse and fun with your children, being able to cover over a whole lot of mistakes in parenting. After hearing them speak and re-reading some of their material we could really see those points where as before I think we focused to much on the disciplining they mention (which isn't even a main point). Michael pearl was really funny and he is a giant. (easily a ft. taller than me) Here you can purchases the videos of the conference, I recommend it! (look for us in the audience)

So a couple of months ago we took all of the employees on a little field trip. they had no idea where we were going or what we were doing. (well they had some ideas but they were way off) Our firs stop was our coffee roaster, Coffee Klatch. It was great super helpful and a lot of fun! Heather Perry who is one of the best barista's in the country/world spent a few hours teaching us some skillz. then from there we went to Newport beach, rented a boat and cruised around for a few hours. then topped it off with dinner at Melting Pot.

the second part of our surprise field trip was renting a boat and cruising around the Newport harbor for a couple of hours. It was so much fun. Everyone took turns at the wheel navigating through the treacherous waters.

Gentry really wanted to see some seals...until we got close.

Gentry was sitting on the front of the boat enjoying the ride, when i spotted these two monsters laying on top of each other, pooping all over this poor guys boat. I decided to take over at the helm and bring us in for a closer look. I got a little too close, they sat up, opening their mouths and hissing at us. I thought for sure the big one was going to jump in our boat, sink it, and eat us! Gentry tried to hop back in the boat real fast, I am glad she didn't fall in the bay!

Here is the crew at the melting pot, the most amazing restaurant I have ever been to. Our friends Jason and Kristi introduced us to this place and now we are ruined. We wanted to take everyone to somewhere nice; a place we could just hang out for a long time and talk and have a good time. I don't think anyone was disappointed the melting pot came blew us away again!

Erika and i went to see "Fireproof" this last weekend with our friend Joel and Katie. It was really good! It had a few actors that were not top notch but overall pretty funny, a great message, put together well. It's a great date movie. It might seem kind of lame if you aren't married (I don't remember what I would have thought back then, I think i was idealistic and thought Erika and i would never have any disagreements let alone arguments!) We have compared it to other movies we have seen and wished they were made more like fireproof. Fireproof does such a good job of being realistic and biblical at the same time. Oh ya our friend Natalie's parents have really big parts in the movie (kirk Camrons parents) and did great!

Monday late night bike rides. Mostly fixed gear some cruisers (like me). This is after a ride, so not everyone is in the shot. Normally there are about 20-25 riderz but since school started i haven't been able to make it.

also a Monday night thing is jazz in the alley next to our coffee shop.

For some reason we thought we were not busy enough and decided to add one more crazy thing to our already packed out schedule. Catering the local high school football games. It is a lot of fun once we are set up, but it stresses me out. I just don't want another paralyzed face!!

So a lot of people thought Erika was crazy when she said she wanted a perm. Well after a long wait she finally got it and it turned out great. It mellowed out a little since this picture. She really wants to bring back the perm so if you are inspired let her know it will make her day.

Well Chad, Lisa, and now Naomi Breezed into our lives this last week. They where in Palm Springs for some training before heading back to China. Our time was short but so sweet. We miss them so much and only got one day with them. Their new baby is wonderful, a great addition! Why can't we gather everyone we love and all live in one place!?! It makes me that much more excited about the Kingdom. God gave us just a taste, a little sample to whet our appetite. If we can have such wonderful fellowship in an imperfect world, how much more great will things be in the presence of our Creator.

Ok here is a little update. The Bell’s palsy is gone, Praise God!! We went and hung out with the Woodard’s in OK City for 10 days that was a super sweet time. The coffee shop is staying really busy. We had to hire two more employees. (One of our old employees is moving back to Washington and the other is gong to school full time.) so lots of training going on. Late night bike rides have been exciting nothing like the cool of the night, smells of the plants and no cars on the road. Surfing on Sunday mornings has been great! Erika got a nursing job so she is doing that two days a week school started up for me again, Organic Chemistry and Anatomy and physiology (easy stuff, I hope). We feel pretty busy like we are just going and going. My family got together at my grandpa’s camp (JH ranch) we were really bummed out we couldn’t make it. Erika did get to take a quick weekend trip up to see her grandparents and help her sister, Rachel move down to Long Beach. Well that’s us in a nutshell, sorry for the hiatus!

So for the last 3 weeks I have had a condition called bells palsy. First half my tongue went numb, then the next day my left eye wouldn't close, then half my face totally stopped working. I look a whole lot like these pictures (courtesy of neil). Well the good news is, i can kind of twitch my mouth now.

Here i am with the pilot, call sign "Bitter". i have no idea how he got that name but from what they told me it could be worse. I would want something along the lines of say, Ice Man, Maverick, Viper, Merlin, Jester, I could go on and on. Bitter has one of the best jobs there is, if he didn't have to be away from his family so much and get shot at all day. However if i am going to get shot at, I would want get shot at while flying this plane!

This is one of the sweetest cars i have seen in real life. So henry is going to write a new parenting book called "Get the !@#$ away from that chain". At the air show we all learned that if you want your child to do something you don't spank them or instruct them kindly, you use the f word. I think His book is going to be a big best seller. We heard this technique demonstrated for us numerous times. In fact that is where the title of the book is going to come from, it is a direct quote after a very young child knocked the chains over on to the million dollar car.

The air force Thunderbirds were the main attraction and it was awesome!!

One of the coolest parts of the show was when we were all watching 4 of the jets fly in formation and out of no where another one comes really low and really fast and blew our eardrums out!

As we were watching the air show i was trying to imagine standing out there in the desert trying to shoot at one of those jets with some 1970's piece of soviet junk bazooka gun. First you can't hear the jets until they have probably already blown you up and are on their way back to base. Second if i were some how able to out run the jet on my trusty steed i think this helicopter would suddenly appear from behind a dune and finish off the job. Another lesson i took away from the air show is not to mess with the US military!

We were all convinced we were going to die in the desert due heat exhaustion and thirst deprivation. However we were able to find refreshment at the AM PM.
Another thing we learned is that if you tell people you are "from out of town" they are a lot kinder and forgiving of your bad driving and other mistakes you might make. I think it makes them feel special that you would visit their town and that they get to give you some inside information about the place. (even if the town where you are from is only 10 min away, but they don't have to know that!)

ok maybe it wasn't that recent, but spencer and amy came to town to chill out with us and enjoy some alone time before the birthing of their baby. It was so refreshing and awesome to hang out with them. Amy got to fulfill her life long dream of doing the chalk art on our menu board. We got tons of compliments on it. I just wish their stay was longer.

this character came to town. Zach was in LA for a stop on his speaking tour. We were so glad he was able to borrow a car and drive over to see us. Since visiting us he has gotten married to a fine young lady. The closer it gets to summer the camp longings start to sink in. But we are responsible now and can't just up and travel around the country. (or can we?) Thanks for coming to visit us guys!

Well back in Oct. we were considering buying season passes to bear Mt. and snow summit (ski resorts about 45 min way) but with the shop time and money are not things we have in excess so the idea was moved to the wishful thinking department. I should have prayed instead! But our God who is blesses us richly has provided us with a total of 8 free lift tickets through out the season! I was totally convinced we were not going to get to ride at all. Not to confuse Gods blessing with material riches...I just think that it is crazy that the creator of the universe would care at all about some silly hobby Erika and I enjoy. That shouldn't surprise me though, He loves me so much He took my punishment for my sin. The view from the top of Snow Vally was one the the most amazing thing i have ever seen. We could see all the way to the pacific ocean, we could even see Catalina Island which is 22 miles off the coast. Skiing and snowboarding is one of our favorite activities to do together.

well the good news is i mastered my first chemistry test by getting a 96.5. which was the highest grade in the class, something that has only happened one other time in my life. My sophomore year in high school, mr. klien's history class. It was only one test and it was so eventfully it stands out in my mind like it was yesterday. the other news is i had to drop the class. stuff came up at the shop, one of our employee's found another job. what was i thinking anyway? school+coffeeshop don't mix. God's timing is perfect so i would like to give it another try later on down the road.

After getting picked up from the airport by the yeatts' and arriving in Lynchburg, we headed over to Bryan and tiffany's house. That was a surprise because they now live in a mansion that they have personally spent the last many months remodeling. needless to say it was so homey due to tiffany's decorating skillz. finally out of apartments she can let her creativity run wild. It was so cool to see them as parents. they have done a great job with their little girl, Catalina. We stayed up super late hanging out and picked right back up again the next day. The hardest part about this trip was tearing ourselves away from each family we were visiting. we could have spent a month with each of the family's we stayed with.

Well folks, Chad and Erika are taking their first vacation since opening the shop. We are headed back to our old stomping grounds of Virginia. Our friend Kathrine is having her wedding reception and since she only gave a few days notice for the wedding, we couldn't make it . But this is working out perfect! We figured since we were flying all that way we had to stay for at least a week. Our 3 great employees (and friends) stepped up to the plate and told us to get out of town. Our only regret is that we can't make it a 2 month trip and see our N. Carolina friends, Snowbird friends, our family in Arkansas, Louisville friends, Oklahoma, France and Nebraska friends. bummer. Well Lynchburg here we come! (Lord willing)

well I have been slacking with the picture taking. This is a cool shot Seth took when we went to the beach . I have been going surfing early, Sunday before church. Every time i have gone out we have had dolphins swim super close to us. The weekly surf trips have been a great time of felloship with the guys, a lot of much needed exercise, and some solitude with the Lord surrounded by his beautiful creation.

On 8-17-07 Intelligentsia Coffee and tea opened their first shop outside of Chicago. It is in Silver Lake, Ca (next to Hollywood on sunset blvd). Our friend Nick Griffith was selected to be one of the barista/roasters. In honor of the event we closed the shop early and Erika and I went with mike in his 1982 diesel powered VW Dasher. It was really fun, the place was packed out, the DJ had some bumpin' music, free coffee and espresso flowed like brown lava into already over caffeinated hipsters. the patio. the place to see and be scene.

3 weeks ago Natalie and Erin flew to southern California to stay with us for a week and drive up to Chad and Lisa's wedding. It was really cool and little did we know it would be the start of weeks of company. I wish you could see how big our apartment is, you would think it was funny we could fit anyone else besides us two in there. I thought that it would be difficult being with people all of the time but it was easy. Nat and Erin in San Fran

About 5 days after erin and Natalie left these two characters show up at our shop in disguise. Not only that, they had worked it out with our employee, mike to work an extra day and booked a hotel at the beach!! It was such a good time of felloship, refreshment, and relaxation. After they had left we were telling Chad and Lisa how convicting it was spending time with them. We have developed some bad habits in our communication since moving out here and also justify a lack of love for one another (more so me than Erika). Juan and Debbie were such a good example to us, a great reminder of how we can interact with one another when we are being obedient to the Lord. We miss them a lot and hope Juan will be led to start a Spanish speaking church near us.

Then Lisa and Chad rolled into town. They were only supposed to stay for an evening and then keep on traveling but we couldn't get enough of them so we managed to talk them into staying for 3 days! It was awesome! They have now been married 3 weeks and things are going great. God is doing suer cool things with them as a couple and they are such an encouragement to be around. We have to see them again while they are still in the states!

Three Years!!

Well folks last Tuesday, July 10th was our 3 year anniversary. It was the first time we got to spend our anniversary together so that made it extra special. Our marriage has been going really well lately! Since moving to CA and opening the shop we have really been stretched. We have lived with my parents, lived in a leaking trailer in the ghetto, worked 90 hours a week for 5 months, spent every waking (and sleeping) hour together, and had no break from spending time with customers. All things that were external pressure on our marriage. But God is so gracious, and has kept us faithful to himself and each other. I feel like we now have such a deeper love for each other. But really, when it comes to the big picture we have not been through that much. As much as Erika hates to hear this, "things can always get worse!" Please friends continue to keep us accountable, and please pray for us. We never want to let our guard down, it seems like one of the most vulnerable places in a Christian's life. We are excited about each other and the life God has for us. I hope His plan includes many, many,many, amazing years together.

We had a girl named Alison sing and play the piano one night.

We switch out our art every 2 months and the current artist held a reception with Spanish dancing. Her name is Jeanette Varsik and she is the one in the red dress. It got wild!

My little sister turned 16 last month so my parents threw her a party. After the beats started bumping and the kids started grinding (not my sister though...I hope) my parents wondered what they had done, why they had hired a DJ, and why they had turned the lights off. "thats it no one around here is ever aloud to turn 16 again."

Here at Augie's coffee house we try to get some good art on the top of our drinks but it takes great shots, milk steamed just right (not to thick not to thin, not to hot, not to cold) and a few loving flicks of the wrist as you pour not to fast but not to slow.

This is called etching, it isn't poured art.

Erika's parents did something they said they would never do...Move to southern California. They kind of cheated though because they are living and working in the beautiful mts. at a Christian conference center. No smog, no traffic, 115 degree summers, no electricity (just kidding about that last one). We feel so blessed to be able to live so close to both of our parents. On our last trip we saw some very strange things...
A man who works for them turned his Mercedes-benz into a driving dog house. He took the passenger seat out, the back seat out and made a flat, carpeted deck so his dog could chill while he was at work.

With much difficulty we now have a new espresso machine thanks to Nick. It took a while but the thing is sweet! It is a 3 group wega.

So we have been wanting bikes for a long time and God totally hooked us up by providing some super cheep awesome ones! We never thought we would be in to road bikes, but for around town we could never go back.

Could i be anymore of a hippie? I grew a beard and don't drive anymore to reduce make believe green house gases. If anyone wants to buy my unused Co2 i might go public with it. We will see if we are still riding when it is 120 degrees in redlands.

Erika usually beats me when we race. Wow, i love this girl.

I know this is a little late but i thought you would enjoy these. On st. patricks day we dyed all of our drinks green, and served green Irish cream lattes. Things turned out kind of a green brown but hey we tried.

Bill came out for the weekend. It was awesome hanging out. We went to Beverly hills, Hollywood and Santa Monica on sunday. Even after living out here most of my life i had never been to those places. leave to bill to bring some upscale culture in to our lives. I hope we talked him in to moving out here. Southern CA is not for everyone but i do think it is for Bill!

Thanks for the shiner bill! (he kicked me in the eye while i was chasing him on the beach) People that came in to the shop thought that Erika beats me up.

This is Karen, she was in town for the Redlands Classic which is a pretty sweet bike race that happens here every year. It was the first road race we had ever seen. There is so much to the race , it is pretty interesting. Karens boyfriend is a pretty good racer and she would give us daily updates. She would come in for her daily macchiato (sometimes two!). We have gotten to meet some really cool people since we opened just 5 short (or long) months ago!

Our good friends Henry and Alec, they come by almost every morning. Henry and I have alot of the same interests so if it is not busy we can talk for a long time. A couple of weeks ago he helped me change the brakes on the van, so far so good no failed brakes...yet!

Presidents day we closed up the shop and took a little vacation to the beach. It was so nice, a great time of rest and refreshment. We took this picture on the ferry going across the Balboa Bay. We stayed at one of the sweetest hotels I have been in, it was called The Bay Shores Inn. these are some of the amazing flowers they had growing around the place.

This is Bodie and Anita they want to make movies for a living. bodie is the shop pac-man master no one can come close to his skills. He hangs out here alot but now he moved his office so we don't see him as much which is a bummer. Anita only sneeks in once in awhile but we like it when she comes by for her strawberry smoothie. I think they are IMing each other in this picture.

On Jan 12th (erika's b-day) we woke up to snow in Southern CA, not the moutain part of CA, the sweaty desert part. It was awesome! erika thought it was the best b-day treat ever. It didn't last long, I tried to get some photo's before it all melted.
